RFID Key Fobs Explained

RFID Key Fobs Explained: Types, Frequencies, and How to Duplicate

Updated September 2025 • By Sumokey’s RFID Engineering Team

RFID key fobs are everywhere—from apartment doors to condo pools and gated parking. This guide explains the different RFID key fob types (LF, HF, UHF) and shows safe, compliant ways to duplicate an apartment key fob using an RFID cloner kit / duplicator kit or Sumokey’s in-person service.

What is an RFID Key Fob?

An RFID key fob is a credential (tag) that communicates with a reader at a door, gate, or garage. Inside each fob is a microchip and antenna that transmit a unique ID when near a reader. If the system recognizes the ID, access is granted.

RFID Key Fob Types & How They’re Used

LF (Low Frequency – 125 kHz)

  • Used for gates, pools, gyms, and elevators.
  • Short range (~10 cm), reliable, resistant to interference.
  • Brands: HID Prox, AWID, ioProx, some Schlage.

HF (High Frequency – 13.56 MHz)

  • Common for apartment unit doors and smart locks.
  • Read range: 10 cm–1 m depending on system.
  • Examples: MIFARE, iCLASS SE, Schlage, Salto, Miwa.

UHF (Ultra-High Frequency – 860–960 MHz)

  • Typical for long-range vehicle gates and parking stickers.
  • Examples: Nedap, TagMaster, TransCore.

Dual-frequency fobs: Some apartments use LF for amenities and HF for unit doors—requiring both in one fob.

Apartment & Condo Use Cases

Apartments and condos often limit residents to a single fob. That’s fine until you need extras for family, roommates, caregivers, cleaners, or Airbnb guests. Here’s how different types show up in residential buildings:

  • LF (125 kHz): pools, gyms, elevators, shared amenities.
  • HF (13.56 MHz): individual unit doors and smart locks.
  • UHF: parking garage stickers/tags.

Common apartment brands: Schlage (9691T), HID, Salto, and Miwa.
